The town of Saint Malo was built to control the estuary of the Rance river and the open sea beyond. It is famous as the home of many french privateers during the 18th century. Since then, the town has expanded far beyond its original limits, today the "inner Saint Malo". During World War II, it was partly destroyed, but the old buildings were rebuilt in the exact same style as before.
