The village was founded in the middle ages when the region was under the counts of Provence. It has been famous for different reasons among which the fact that it was frequented by numerous artists such as Yves Montand, Simone Signoret and Lino Ventura in the 1960s. The painter Chagall lived there during 20 years and is buried in its cemetary. Matisse and Modigliani also spent some time here.
