The castle of Val was located in the upper part of a valley of the river Dorgogne.
A large dam built in the 1950s submerged the entire valley with many villages. The castle itself should have been destroyed but the water level was finally lower than expected, allowing its preservation.
Though it is located in the Auvergne region, it was bought by the Corrèze département for 1 Franc, extensively rebuilt and is maintained since then.
